Quick Review
M1 Finance offers a unique way of investing through building a Pie. The Pie is the building block of your portfolio. You add different slices (funds, stocks) to build your pie. The pie interface helps you build and manage your portfolio. M1 offers over 6000 stocks and funds that you can use to build your own Pie. You can also select from over 100 Expert Pies that were created for different financial goals and investment objectives.

M1 Finance is ideal for the long-term, hands-off investor. M1 offers the ability to both automate your investment strategy and to rebalance your portfolio.

Pros:

  • Fractional shares
  • No trading fees or asset management fees
  • Easy to build a portfolio and 80 expert portfolios you can follow
  • Can buy stock and ETFs individually also

Cons:

  • Cannot time trades
  • Accounts with less than $20 and no trading activity for 90 days are charged a fee
  • No online chat capability
  • No mutual funds

How it works:

M1 Finance automates the construction and maintenance of your custom investment portfolio. After you create your Pie-based portfolio, M1 utilizes its proprietary trading system to automate all of your trading activity. You’ll never have to input or execute any trades manually.

M1 aggregates all trades and executes them during a single Trade Window. All trading activity for the day will be completed during this window, and your portfolio will update after M1’s Trade Window has closed for the day.

M1 utilizes event-driven automation. There are distinct events that cause your account to trade: your first deposit, future deposits and withdrawals, rebalances, cash, and orders.

Features:

What types of accounts can you open?

  • Individual Brokers Account
  • Joint Broker Account
  • IRA: Traditional IRA, Roth IRA and SEP IRAs
  • Trust

Automation:

M1 allows you to automate your contributions with investing schedules, and by dynamically rebalancing your portfolio. This saves you time for having to place manual trades.

Customization:

M1 allows you to build a custom portfolio of the stocks and funds you want or you can choose from more than 80 expert portfolios.

Fractional shares:

Fractional shares allow you to own stocks and ETFs, regardless of the share price. Fractional shares allows you to make diversification simpler and ensures you’re always fully invested.

What is auto-invest?

You can set your portfolio targets and auto-invest maintains the balance as you deposit money or receive dividends. Cash and dividends remain in your cash balance until it reaches $25 or more. The cash will be automatically invested into your entire portfolio as long as auto-invest is on. M1s algorithm will rebalance your portfolio. Auto-invest can be turned on or off.

What we love about M1 Finance?

The auto-invest is a great feature and something we love here at TMDB. If you want to be a hands off investor and not place daily trades, this is a great feature.

Where M1 falls short?

Only offering one trading time for M1 customers, and two trading times for M1 Plus. This is not a good trading platform for day traders or for someone that wants to time their trades.
